Project N or Whatsit!! Project N is a 4m x 1m N Gauge layout based in the centre of the country to allow a mix of stock to be used. Principles from the GWR and Great Central are featured on the layout. The photographs show all of the points made in the text. Baseboards The base boards, which are 1m x 0.5m, are constructed using a 3” x 1” frame with three 2” x 1” lateral supports fixed inside either end and across the middle to allow a sheet of 2” thick polystyrene to be laid inside the frame. Each frame was then covered with cork tiles using ‘No Nails’ to stick them down. 2” thick polystyrene is quite rigid and therefore three supports are all that is necessary. The base boards are fixed as per the diagram. The boards are lined up using dowels and clips are used fasten them together.
Supports The supporting frame is a mixture of 3” x 2”, 2” x 2” and 2” x 1”. Track Track used was code 55 Peco on the scenic area and Code 80 in the fiddle yard. Track was initially lightly pinned to allow for any adjustments and then, once ballasting with washed granite chips was complete, the pins were removed from the front and pushed in tightly in the fiddle yard. Board joints in the scenic area were made by soldering the track to brass coated board. In fiddle yard, board joints were made using lengths of setrack across the joints. Point Control was produced using wire in tube and Peco motors.
